Il Paese viene diviso essenzialmente in cinque regioni, ognuna corrispondente ad un punto cardinale pi il centro, che ospita la capitale Central City. Oltre che ai soldati, i quali sono divisi in gradi da recluta a generale, lingresso nellesercito aperto anche agli alchimisti che, dopo aver superato un test, ottengono il titolo di alchimista di Stato, un grado equivalente a quello di maggiore e fondi illimitati per le loro ricerche, ma con lobbligo di scendere in guerra e di seguire tre regole principali non trasmutare loro, non effettuare trasmutazioni umane e giurare fedelt allesercito5. Edward e Alphonse Elric sono due giovani fratelli che vivono nel paese di Amestris. Il loro padre, Hohenheim, ha lasciato la casa quando erano ancora piccoli, mentre alcuni anni pi tardi la loro madre Trisha muore in seguito ad una malattia, lasciando i due orfani. I fratelli tentano allora di riportarla in vita tramite lalchimia, ma la trasmutazione non procede come previsto e Edward perde la gamba sinistra mentre Alphonse lintero corpo. Nel tentativo di riportare lanima di Alphonse nel mondo umano, Edward sacrifica il suo braccio destro per legare lanima del fratello a unarmatura, facendosi poi rimpiazzare gli arti perduti con delle protesi meccaniche chiamate automail. Dopo la nomina di Edward ad alchimista di Stato, i due fratelli iniziano un viaggio attraverso Amestris per cercare la pietra filosofale, un oggetto alchemico capace di annullare il principio dello scambio equivalente, e riottenere cos i loro corpi originari. Durante il loro cammino, i fratelli Elric devono affrontare diversi avversari che come loro sono interessati alla pietra tra di essi Scar, un sopravvissuto della guerra di Ishbar che trama vendetta contro gli alchimisti di Stato per aver sterminato il suo popolo e gli homunculus, un gruppo di creature dallaspetto umano con forti capacit combattive e labilit di rigenerare le loro ferite grazie alluso delle pietre filosofali. Con il prosieguo delle loro indagini, Edward e Alphonse scoprono che Amestris stata fondata proprio dagli homunculus e dal loro creatore, un essere conosciuto come Padre, i quali controllano in segreto lesercito e progettano di utilizzare lintera nazione come cerchio alchemico per trasmutarla in una pietra filosofale gigante. Scoperto il piano del Padre, i fratelli Elric, insieme ad alcuni membri dellesercito e ad altri alleati incontrati durante il cammino, decidono di contrastarlo. Durante la battaglia finale, Alphonse si sacrifica per far riottenere ad Edward il braccio mancante, grazie al quale il ragazzo distrugge la pietra filosofale del Padre. Rinunciando per sempre alluso dellalchimia, Edward riesce a recuperare il fratello e i due riprendono la loro vita, decidendo di viaggiare per vedere il mondo e ottenere nuove conoscenze. I due vengono spesso aiutati da Winry Rockbell, una loro amica dinfanzia e riparatrice di automail dal colonnello Roy Mustang, un alchimista di Stato soprannominato alchimista di fuoco e dal maggiore Armstrong, un alchimista dotato di un fisico enorme e statuario. In their search, they hear of the Philosophers Stone, a powerful alchemy artifact that the brothers can use to recover their bodies. When creating the series, Arakawa took her inspiration from several experiences in her childhood, including her parents jobs and the manga she used to read. Several types of merchandising have also been released based on the characters from the series. Reviewers from manga, anime, and other media have also commented on the characters. Most of them have praised their development in the story as well as Arakawas artwork. Creation and conceptioneditThe author Hiromu Arakawa integrated several social problems into the story after talking to people who had suffered and lived through them, such as refugees, war veterans and former yakuza, or simply by watching news concerning those issues. Several plot elements expand on these themes, such as Pinako Rockbell caring for the Elric brothers after the death of their mother, and the brothers helping people all over the country to gain an understanding of the meaning of family. Many characters of the series differ from the manga to the first anime, the homunculi being the most notable, which was because Arakawa wanted the first anime to have a different ending from the manga, to avoid repeating the same events in both series. Arakawa said that she became attracted by the idea of using alchemy in the manga after reading about the philosophers stone. She liked it so much that she started reading books of alchemy, which she found very complicated because some books contradicted others. In the making of the characters designs, Arakawa has commented that the manga authors Suih Tagawa and Hiroyuki Eto are her main inspirations, and she also mentions her artwork is a mix of both of them. When drawing the series characters, Alex Louis Armstrong and the little animals are the easiest for her to draw. Due to the fact she likes dogs, Arakawa added several of them in the story. She also adds various muscles to most of the characters fearing that otherwise they may look much too thin to the point they could look unhealthy. Despite being requested several times by fans to show the characters birthdates, Arakawa has claimed that she never thought of them. In the two animated adaptations of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, the characters have been voiced by famous voice actors such as Romi Park and Rie Kugimiya who portray Edward and Alphonse, respectively, in Japanese. In the second adaptation, most of the Japanese voice actors were replaced with the exception of a few, including Park and Kugimiya who reprised their roles. Edward is smart, brave and even bold, but also has a prideful tendency to be harsh and arrogant. From left to right Lust, Envy, Sloth, Gluttony, Pride, Wrath, and Greed in the manga. Homunculi,Homunkurusu serve as the primary antagonistic force in Fullmetal Alchemist. They are a group of artificially created humans who seek to fulfill their leaders goals of creating a huge Philosophers Stone. Homunculi are personifications of the darkest aspects of human nature, and each is named after one of the seven deadly sins they are identified by their bearing of the mark of the Ouroboros somewhere on their body. They also possess a heightened regenerative ability, rendering them nigh indestructible, though not invincible. Aside from this, the concept of the homunculi varies drastically between the manga and first anime series. The homunculi were created by or are at the discretion of Father, each being a manifestation of one of his traits his greed, his lust, and so on. Father would later reveal that he ultimately created the homunculi for the sole attempt of purifying himself of what he believed to be his personal flaws. As a psychological effect of their unusual physical prowesses, many homunculi tend to be proud, and exalt their nature as a homuculus. Each homunculus has a Philosophers Stone somewhere in his or her body which fuels their regenerative ability. At least five of the Homunculi are either natural humans or artificial human bodies who were injected with Philosophers Stones, which were broken off from Fathers body. Wrath and the second Greed are based on natural people and are the only homunculi to not be created from scratch.
